Acupuncture is a distinctive practice that has evolved from ancient Chinese folk medicine into one of today's most popular healing interventions. This technique stimulates specific acupuncture points to release body tension, alleviate pain, reduce stress, and improve blood circulation. Although some people worry about pain during acupuncture, the procedure uses tiny, hair-thin needles, making it virtually painless. Acupuncture prompts the body to release natural pain-relieving chemicals, including endorphins and neurotransmitters, which help reduce pain perception. Additionally, by enhancing blood flow to areas of muscle tension, acupuncture supports healing, as increased circulation naturally aids recovery.

Benefits of Acupuncture

While acupuncture is often linked to chronic pain relief, it offers several other surprising benefits, including:

Better sleep
Headache relief
Increased energy
Reduced back and joint pain
Reduced stress and anxiety
Blood pressure control
Reduced muscle tension
Allergy relief
Acupuncture has proven effective for a variety of conditions, such as back or neck pain, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and postoperative pain.

Did you know that science has demonstrated the significant therapeutic value of human touch? At Elements Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, we incorporate human touch into our treatment plans through massage therapy. Unlike a typical spa massage, our massage therapy is designed to reduce pain, improve mobility, and promote overall health and wellness.

Who Can Benefit from Massage Therapy?

Various conditions can benefit from massage therapy, including:

Soft Tissue Injuries: Massage therapy aids the healing process by boosting blood circulation and reducing inflammation. Specific techniques can also enhance joint mobility.
Tension Headaches: Headaches often originate from muscle restrictions in the head and neck. Alleviating these restrictions can help ease headache pain.
Osteoarthritis: Massage therapy can help manage osteoarthritis symptoms, including joint pain and limited mobility.
Chronic Pain Conditions: Massage therapy is beneficial for those suffering from conditions like fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome, helping to relieve pain and promote relaxation.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy

Pelvic health physiotherapy involves assessing and treating various conditions and concerns related to the pelvic floor muscles and the surrounding pelvic girdle area. These muscles, which extend from the tailbone to the pubic bone and sitting bones, provide support for internal organs such as the bladder, uterus, and rectum. They play a crucial role in preventing urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, aiding sexual function, supporting the lymphatic system, and are important for our inner abdominal core unit.

Pelvic health physiotherapy should be the primary approach for individuals experiencing incontinence, pain, or dysfunction. A qualified pelvic health physiotherapist is trained to conduct both internal and external evaluations of the pelvic floor, including vaginal and/or rectal examinations to assess muscle strength and tension accurately. Pelvic physiotherapists are authorized to perform these assessments and treatments.

Who can benefit from pelvic health physiotherapy?
Pelvic health physiotherapy can benefit women, men, or children experiencing:

- Bowel or bladder incontinence, urgency, or frequency
- Prenatal and postpartum pelvic rehabilitation
- Pelvic organ prolapse or pelvic heaviness
- Pre- and post-surgical urological or gynecological conditions
- Sexual pain and dysfunction
- Persistent pelvic pain
- Painful menstrual cycles
- Chronic urinary tract infections
- Diastasis recti (abdominal separation)
- Vaginismus/dyspareunia (painful intercourse)
- Digestive issues (IBS, constipation, etc.)
- Men's pelvic health concerns, including post-prostatectomy issues, pelvic/groin pain, or chronic non-bacterial prostatitis
- Post-pelvic cancer treatments
- Back and sacroiliac joint pain
- Overactive bladder
- Various other pelvic conditions

What does the assessment involve?
The assessment typically includes filling out a questionnaire beforehand to address your concerns and goals. During the subjective examination, you'll discuss your symptoms and reasons for seeking physiotherapy. The objective examination may encompass assessments of posture, lower back, hips, sacroiliac joints, and pubic symphysis. With your consent, both external and internal evaluations of the pelvic floor muscles may be conducted, with detailed discussion during the assessment.

Based on the examination findings, a customized plan of care will be discussed with you, considering your specific goals and symptoms. You'll receive exercises, educational materials, and strategies to address your concerns.

What does treatment entail?
Pelvic physiotherapy is highly regarded internationally. For example, in France, the government subsidizes pelvic physiotherapy for all postpartum women, and in Britain, surgery for urinary incontinence is not recommended without prior assessment by a pelvic physiotherapist for six weeks.

Treatment options may include:

- Pelvic floor muscle strengthening exercises
- Connective tissue and visceral mobilization techniques
- Myofascial trigger point release
- A home exercise program
- Education about pelvic health
- Keeping a bowel or bladder diary
- Guided relaxation techniques and mindfulness practices
- Mobilization and manual therapy of the lumbar spine, hips, coccyx, and sacroiliac joints
- Biofeedback
- Electrical muscle stimulation
